I've discovered the secret to the ultimate chocolate morning shake. Let us discuss (pause for dramatic effect)...the dark chocolate date smoothie 🙌🏻.
Secret number one: Espresso powder. The coffee deepens the flavor of the cocoa powder AND gives you a nice caffeine boost in the morning. I'm not much of a coffee drinker so I'm all about that hidden caffeine effect.
Secret number two: DATES! I have finally figured out a way to use dates in my morning smoothie and it's so delicious. They add sweetness and TONS of flavor. Who knew??
I also add a little honey, but honestly the dates take care of most of the "sweet" in this recipe. Definitely drizzled more than one date with honey as a quick bite while photographing this smoothie 😂.
Finally, secret number three: Chocolate. Chocolate chocolate chocolate. I am an absolute chocolate fiend and morning time is the best time to have a little healthier sweet treat amiright?
I do already have a chocolate protein shake here on the blog, but that's more up the peanut butter alley. Sometimes, I just need that straight chocolate flavor.

Deep chocolate flavor with a hint of caffeine, this smoothie recipe is the perfect healthy sweet treat morning boost!
Ingredients
- 1 cup unsweetened coconut milk
- ½ cup non-fat plain yogurt
- 1 ½ tablespoons cocoa powder
- ½ teaspoon instant espresso powder (I use Medaglia D’Oro Instant Espresso Coffee)
- 8 dates, minced
- 2 large bananas
- 1 teaspoon flax seeds
- Honey as desired for sweetness
Instructions
- Add all ingredients to a blender. Mix on high until completely blended. Taste and add honey as desired. Enjoy!
