Heyhi! So I’m starting a new monthly movie date (sans spoilers of course!), because other than cook that’s probably my favorite thing. I absolutely love going to the movies, renting movies, turning on my fave movies in the background while I cook, ALL the movies. We’re lucky enough to have a brick and mortar movie store in our neighborhood (with popcorn!) that we can walk to (If you’re ever in Fremont Seattle, head over to Video Isle)! Just like old times 😁. So just a once month, I’m going to take it easy and chat about movies and all the other goings on in Aberdeen’s Kitchen. Let the first June movie date commence!
Oh but first, cocktail choice for tonight's movie:
Ok, NOW here we go.
Let's go to the Movies!
Watched in theaters: Ocean’s 8. SO fun!!! Went and saw this with a girlfriend of mine and it was fabulous. Hilarious, girl power to the max, intriguing, and absolutely gorgeous fashion. It's literally dripping with gemstones! Will definitely rewatch. (Photo Via Pinterest)
Rented for the homestead: Annihilation - I actually really enjoyed this movie! It’s definitely a movie you have to pay attention to or you’ll miss the science. Stunning visuals, mind boggling to be honest, particularly some crazy crystal trees! Kind of like Arrival but a little more dangerous and with a kaleidoscope of color. (Photo Via Pinterest)
Excited to see: Incredibles 2. I know I know, I’m a child...and I love it. You know you want to see it too! I’m SO excited to see this movie. The first one came out over a decade ago and I’ve been waiting foreverrrr for the second one. This month it’s finally here! Next movie date, I’ll let you know how it was 🤩. (Photo Via Pinterest)
Out of the Kitchen - Chicago
Dan and I actually got ourselves on a plane and flew off to Chicago this month! We met up with some friends of his and hit the town for basically a week straight. Even despite the crazy heat (there was a ridiculous heat wave while we were there, seriously intense) it was a blast! My favorite stops:
The Art Institute of Chicago, where I could have wandered around pretty much all day. There was an entire room full of Monet's lily pads, haystacks, and harbor paintings in the impressionist section, not to mention Seurat's A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of Grande Jatte, as well as a couple Pollock's and a gallery of Andy Warhol!
The architecture river boat tour. I had no idea I would love learning about the architecture of Chicago so much! Honestly, I think it was all down to our amazing guide (the mimosa probably didn't hurt either 😆). He was so knowledgeable and just so passionate it was hard not to be as excited about the buildings as he was! Plus, it was also pretty cool to be boating down the Chicago river in general. Growing up in LA, the "LA River" is that big concrete expanse in Grease where they race cars...Not much of a river right?? Getting on a boat down any river is always a treat!
Finally, we had a beach day on Lake Michigan. A sorely needed beach day! The heat was no joke. I would walk outside and within 5 minutes look like I had just run a marathon. The beach was the perfect escape! Dan and our friends all managed to play THREE GAMES of volleyball on the literally burning hot sand (not a cloud in the sky!) while yours truly sat in the water for two hours.
That's right. Two hours. And it was fabulous. The water is definitely a little chilly, but nothing a jump in the Puget Sound on the 4th of July swimmer can't handle 😎😅.
We also ate a TON of pizza because obviously. Dan hit up the city's famous deep dish at Giordano's (I'm not the biggest fan of deep dish...I knowwww, it's a texture thing) and I tried every thin crust version I could find. Pretty sure I gained back every ounce of weight I lost doing Bodyboss but hey! Vacation is vacation, I'll get back to it eventually...maybe 😁.
Food Focus
I can't stay away from food completely, so let's just go with it. 4th of July is just around the corner so it’s time to fire up the BBQ! Here are a few of my oldie's but goodies for the summer holidays:
4th of July Blue Cheese Burgers with Caramelized Onion and Arugula
Southwest Roasted Potato Salad
Summertime Basil Watermelon and Goat Cheese Salad
Favorite Kitchen Item of the Month
My handy dandy sheet pan. When the heat gets crazy, I need everything done in one pot. But guess what? It’s even easier when it’s all done on one large sheet pan! We’ve been using ours none stop this month. Here are a few of my favorite sheet pan recipes on tap for dinner this week!
20 Minute Curried Tandoori Cauliflower
Sheet Pan Baked Fish and Chips
Well, that's it for our June Movie Date. But before I go, I would love hear from you! Have you seen any movies this month? No spoilers please! Agree or disagree with any of my quick reviews?
Most importantly, what do you want to hear about? Kitchen questions? Seattle queries? What's my favorite movie? (Hint: It's a famous trilogy, and yes I consider one longggg film). Ask away in the comments below!
