Hihi! We made it to Thursday! Almost the weekend and I for one can’t wait. There’s something about a long weekend where even though I get all that extra time, when I have to go back to work it’s like whaaaaat?? But I thought I got another day of Zelda gaming and book reading! Thus, we made it to Thursday 😂. Now, who's ready for some Julie and Julia style tomato basil bruschetta?
Now, you may or may not have guessed by this point that on my Monday off, I happened to re-watch Julie and Julia. Honestly, I could’ve just done with a straight up Julia Child movie. Meryl Streep is on point and Julia Child is basically my idol. I mean, the woman straight up made it acceptable to use ALL. THE. BUTTER! How could you not love her?
Anyhoo, it’s safe to say I could NOT get that tomato basil bruschetta scene out of my head (among other fantastically delicious looking recipes in that movie *drool*)! But that bruschetta!! It’s perfect for summer, takes less than 15 minutes to make, and it’s SO fresh and tasty.
Ok so check this out. Tomato basil bruschetta Julie and Julia style: Mix tomatoes, basil, a little parmesan, olive oil, splash of balsamic vinegar, and a pinch of salt and pepper in a bowl. Let sit while you toast up some olive oil and garlic brushed baguette slices in a skillet. Sprinkle the freshly roasted slices with a little salt, top with the tomato mixture, and eat ASAP.
Like I said, less than 15 minutes! The sliced baguette gets perfectly crunchy on the outside while nice and soft on the inside. Topped with that fresh summer produce?? YES PLEASE!
Tomato basil bruschetta Julie and Julia style. You need this your life pronto, trust 😎.
PrintTomato Basil Bruschetta (Julie and Julia Style!)
- Total Time: 13 minutes
- Yield: Serves 2
Ingredients
- ½ baguette, sliced into ¼ inch pieces
- 1 garlic clove
- 2 cups tomatoes, diced (I used a mixture of heirloom tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, and "on the vine" tomatoes - use your favorite!)
- 1 tablespoon basil, roughly chopped
- 1 tablespoon Parmesan, shaved and roughly chopped
- ¼ teaspoon balsamic vinegar
- ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
- Pinch of salt, fresh ground black pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, combine tomatoes, basil, Parmesan, balsamic vinegar, 1 teaspoon of olive oil, pinch of salt, and ground black pepper to taste. Let sit about 10 minutes to let flavors marinate while toasting the bread.
- Brush both sides of baguette slices with the remaining olive oil and rub with garlic clove.
- Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the slices in the skillet until browned, gently pressing occasionally to help toast, about 3-4 minutes per side.
- Sprinkle toasted slices with a pinch of salt. Evenly spoon tomato topping on each slice. Sprinkle with a little fresh ground black pepper. Serve immediately.
- Prep Time: 5 minutes
- Cook Time: 8 minutes

This was so yummy!! Added fresh mozzarella slices to some of the pieces of bread and it was yummy both ways. I also added the garlic directly to the olive oil before brushing it onto the bread slices. Thank you!!

I loved this recipe! And so did my mom...I’ve made it twice already. Except I used all butter the second time, no olive oil. Not as healthy but Julia’s motto has always been “you can never have too much butter!”

Thanks so much for posting this. I just made it and even my husband, who is a *much* better cook than me, really liked it.

Thank you for posting this recipe...I have so, so many tomatoes in the garden, and that scene always called to me! I just found your blog, I'm enjoying your recipes and stories (and I love your black cat!)

This was delicious! The bruschetta looked amazing in the movie and so did yours! I’ve imagined making this for so many years and finally did. Your pictures are beautiful and I can visually taste it :). Thanks for the recipe!
Margo
What type of tomatoes did you use?
Aberdeen
Heirloom tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, and tomatoes on the vine. You can use pretty much any kind! A basic roma tomato would also work just fine. I've updated the recipe to include this information, thanks for pointing this out!

Thank you so much for posting this recipe. I have Googled this for the past 3 years. Every time I watch the movie I try to see if I could figure out the ingredients but always wanted to know the real recipe. I made it with tomatoes, sweet peppers, and even some bacon. It came out pretty good but I still want to make the right recipe. Thank you. I think she serves this with some cooked sausage. Am I right?

This was even better than the movie made it look, which SOUNDS impossible but my tastebuds were singing your praises!!! I'll be looking for excuses to make this every day of the week.
Tammy
Have you ever made the tomato mixture ahead of time and is it ok to let it marinate for a couple of hours?
Brooke
Thank you so much for sharing this! I have been drooling for years over this scene in the movie and was never able to recreate it the way I felt like it was intended...until I realized...uh.. hello?... you Google everything and you can't Google THIS?! Since the last 5 weeks I found your recipe, I have made this two times a week lol OBSESSED. My husband and kids love it and there are never leftovers. My 2 year old even eats it if I don't make it overly crispy!!! Killing my carb intake but sooooo worth it!!!
