Happy new year !!! We've officially started 2018! The beginning of a new year always starts off by looking back on what happened the year before.2017 may have been a year of some serious ups and downs, but I did manage to do something pretty awesome in September. I even got a new stamp in my passport and jetted off to Japan! All in all, it was a pretty big year. Now, it's time to look forward, but not without a quick *cheers* first! Which is why, at the start of get fit January (don't worry, tasty and healthy recipes are headed your way next week!), I'm sharing one of my favorite go to happy hour beverages, the Classic Old Fashioned Cocktail.
Turns out, this is the easiest, quickest drink to make ever and its just SO tasty. I'm a whiskey person myself, particularly bourbon, so it should come as no surprise that the classic old fashioned is one of my go to drinks of choice. If I had known how easy it is to make, I could have definitely saved a trip to the local watering hole and made them at home! Way easier on the wallet too.
You literally only need 6 things, plus ice. Particularly a large singular ice cube if you're being traditional. We have a mold that forms orbs and I feel like I'm in a speak easy in New York in the 1920's whenever we use it. It's fabulous ????.
Anyway, 6 things. First, grab your favorite Bourbon. Second, a sugar cube or some simple syrup. Third, a little Angostura bitters. Fourth, a splash of club soda. Fifth, you're going to need an orange, but you'll only need the peel! Sixth, don't forget that drunken cherry! You can use maraschino cherries but drunken ones are just so much better. Plus, they don't give your classic old fashioned the tropical feel that a maraschino cherry would.
K so. Add simple syrup or sugar cube. Dash the bitters over the sugar cube and smash it. Using simple syrup? Pour in the bitters and a gentle stir works just fine. Add the ice. Pour in bourbon, and top with a splash of club soda. Garnish with orange peel and cherry. Stir as desired, sip and enjoy.
Literally that easy. If you find it to be too potent (it is pretty much just whiskey with a tidge of sugar), go ahead and add a another splash of club soda. Also, you can add a little more simple syrup, up to 1 ½ teaspoons. I wouldn't add a whole other sugar cube though, way too much sweet to be an old fashioned!
Now, who's ready to cheers with me?? Clink your glasses of old fashioned cocktail and lets get this year started! 3...2...
PrintClassic Old Fashioned Cocktail
- Total Time: 5 minutes
- Yield: 1 1x
Ingredients
- 2 ounces bourbon whiskey
- 3 dashes angostura bitters
- 1 to 1 ½ teaspoons simple syrup*, or a sugar cube
- 1 orange peel slice
- 1 "drunken" or maraschino cherry
- Splash of club soda
- Ice cubes (I used one large ice orb).
Instructions
- In your favorite whiskey glass, pour in simple syrup or add sugar cube. If using a cube, pour bitters on top of the cube and crush the sugar. If using simple syrup, add bitters and stir gently.
- Add ice cube(s) to the glass. Pour bourbon over the ice. Stir as desired. Top with a splash of club soda.
- Garnish with an orange slice and drunken cherry.
Notes
*Never made simple syrup before? No worries, it’s easy! In a small sauce pan, heat equal parts water and white sugar until the sugar is dissolved. Then remove from heat, let cool, and then chill in the fridge! I usually make about 1 cup at a time, just to keep on hand; 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar. Keep in the fridge for up to a month!
